Time to go home

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also (John 14:3 NKJV).

These encouraging words were spoken by Jesus to His frightened and confused disciples as He was about to leave them, if only temporarily, to reconcile mankind’s sin on the cross of Calvary. Is there anything more comforting than the promise to be fetched by the Lord Himself, Creator of heaven and earth?

A few years ago I saw a preview of a film which would later be shown on TV. It was about the American boxer James Braddock, also known as the ”Cinderella Man”. He was the son of a poor Irish immigrant and lived in poverty during the Great Depression. After an unexpected victory against Max Baer in 1935, which made him the world heavyweight champion, his life was changed radically, not least economically.

In a very moving scene, the new champion visits the dirty, noisy factory where his father works. He goes up to him and almost shouts into his ear: ”It’s time to go home now, Dad”. The father answers: ”It’s not quite time yet” as he thinks his son means go home after the day’s work. Braddock replies: ”It’s time to go home for good. You don’t need to work here anymore”. Imagine the day when Jesus returns, after His victory over Satan, and says to us: ”It’s time to go home – for good!”.
