How Long?
“And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” (Rev 6:10 NKJV).
The saints who have already arrived in heaven are asking a legitimate question concerning their brothers and sisters, who are being persecuted during the Tribulation Period. The Lord says that the oppression will continue a little while longer, but eventually it will come to an end.
We often ask our ourselves the same question – how long? How long do I need to put up with an annoying person or a difficult situation? Sometimes we even wonder about the length of our earthly journey. Would it not be better if God took us home? Why this unnecessary protraction Lord? Why can you not intervene sooner?
Whether we are dealing with persecuted saints during the Tribulation Period, annoying relationships, strenuous circumstances or mundane pilgrimage, the answer is always the same – the situation will last as long as it is needed for God to accomplish His divine purpose. It is easy for God to change circumstances, but exceedingly difficult to change our stubborn and impatient minds and hearts (Ps 32:9; Isa 65:2). The Bible says that we have need of endurance (Heb 10:36). Also, we are to wait patiently for the Lord (Ps 37:7). Finally, we are told that we will reap in due season if we do not lose heart (Gal 6:19). How long Lord? Not much longer!
