Devotional – God’s ‘illogical’ mathematics!

There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty. The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself” (Prov 11:24-25 NKJV).

Martin Luther once uttered the famous words: “Today, I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer”. Levi Pethrus, the founder of the Swedish Pentecostal Movement, is supposed to have said something along these lines; “because of the bad financial situation in our church, we need to give more money to missions”.

Humanly speaking, this type of thinking is totally illogical and impossible. In God’s eyes it is both logical and possible (Luke 1:37). The boy who lent his ‘lunch’ to Jesus, five barley loaves and two small fish, saw an incredible return on his investment – five thousand ate and were filled (John 6:1.15). God can and will do the same in our lives for He does not show favouritism (Acts 10:34-35; Rom 2:11).

What do we have that we did not receive from Him? (1 Cor 4:7). God wants us to be generous with what we have received (Luke 6:38). If we are afraid that our obedience will bring unmanageable consequences, the Lord has promised to take care of these (Dan 3:16-18; 2 Cor 9:8). Do we dare to trust that His thoughts and ways are so much higher than ours, just as the heavens are higher than the earth (Isa 55:8-9)? God’s mathematics work when we trust Him.
